Dragons once soared in the skies, but that was before the Transformation, before they took human form. Now, demonic forces stand to obliterate them. When left mortally wounded, Darnuir, the Prince of Dragons, can only be saved through a dangerous rebirthing spell. He is left as a babe in human hands.

Twenty years later, Darnuir is of age to wield the Dragon's Blade. As the last member of his bloodline, he is the only one who can. He is plunged into a role he is not prepared for, to lead a people he does not know. Shadowy demons ravage his new home and the alliance between humans, dragons and fairies has fractured.

Time is short, for new threats and deadlier enemies are emerging....

The Dragon Blade The Reborn King (Audible Audio Edition) Michael R Miller Dave Cruse Books

I had a hard time getting into this book. The main character Darnuir, is a dragon prince and he starts off as a fairly nasty character. He is arrogant, self-centered, and is dismissive of humans and fairies. He doesn’t care how many humans suffer or die, he is focused on the superior dragons. Until he suffers a mortal wound and is magically reborn.

It is when he is reborn that the story finally clicked with me. He is raised by humans, with only the wizard who saved him and the human who raises him knowing the truth. Even Darnuir thinks he is human. But when he turns 20 the wizard returns and Darnuir’s birthright, a magical sword called the Dragon’s Blade, comes flying to his hand, that everyone (including Darnuir) suddenly realizes Darnuir is the dragon king.

In Darnuir’s first life, he was raised as a prince in a large city, given every opportunity and turned out as a nasty character; he dies at age 80. In his second life, growing up in a cold, remote location, raised by caring people, and being trained as a hunter, he turned into a much different person in his second life. This is where I really started to enjoy the story.

I enjoyed the wealth of history Mr. Miller provided, going back thousands of years to explain how they came to be in current time and how the relationships between the races evolved. In current times dragons have lost the ability to shift to dragons but have kept superior strength, endurance, eyesight and an enhanced sense of smell.

There are some twists and turns, some hints of changes to come, but it turns out this is the first book in a series so I will have to wait to find out where this story leads.

I received this book for free from the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.

4.5

This is the first book I have read by the author Michael R. Miller. This is a very fast pace story. The author did a great job with the development of the characters during the story. I believe this book could have been split into two different books. I didn't realize that this book was part of a trilogy until near the end. The flow of the story is pretty smooth. There are just a few times where there was some dialog where it came across as ramble. It made it hard to keep focus in the story because it seem irrelevant/unnecessary/ or over covered. Continue to write. I will be checking out book 2 and 3 in this series.
I bought the book on a whim, I love fantasy, dragons, and enchanted swords. This book did not disappoint! The world building is great! The characters well developed, and quite fascinating! The story is rather original in the main characters case especially. The plot surprises and twists actually tweaking my curiosity! It is not like some books where it is easy to figure out where the book is going! There are mysteries to be solved and I am very excited about getting to the sequel! It is a hard book to set down!
I enjoyed this book immensely, but just a few issues. To start sometimes during a conversation it will seem your listening to the thoughts of one person, but then it will switch to the thoughts of another character. I also don't know how to feel about the relationship or not relationship between Cassandra and Darnuir. It just seemed too quick and not really worked into the story the correct way or the right time. I do like Darnuir alot and his character and the difficulties he is facing. Overall I did like the book, the storyline and the characters, just needed a little tweaking. Definitely worth the read. Also not your usual dragon read!
The reborn king is an excellent start to a fantasy series. The main character Darnuir is a dragon prince. His people are being slaughtered in a war with demons and specters. Darnuir is arrogant and brash, but he loves his people and wants the war to end. Unfortunately he will do anything to see this happen, and doesn't care for the other races of fairies and humans.

When Darnuir is fatally injured in an attack on his city, his ally, the wizard Brackendon, makes a crucial decision. If Darnuir dies, the magic of the dragon kings dies with him since he has no heir. So Darnuir faces a different death. Brackendon explains it better than I can.

“As I say, you are essentially killing the person in the rebirthing process. Time is rewound upon the subject and they are left as a baby. It doesn’t save the person who it is used upon. If someone you loved was dying, the rebirth spell would still take them from you. While that person would grow up from a babe once more, their surroundings, their personality, the experiences that shape them would be different. They would never be truly the same."

So Darnuir is raised by humans with no memory of his former self.

This is such an interesting idea and it was executed so well. When Darnuir comes of age twenty years later, he has no memory of his former self, but the men and dragons do. Twenty years is not a long time for a dragon, or a human either. He struggles with the expectations placed on him by his people, and dealing with the consequences of actions that he has no memory of making.

The secondary characters are well developed and have distinct personalities. Even the villains have great characterization. This is traditional high fantasy, with fairies and dragons, trolls and wizards. It's a lot of fun and I can't wait to see where the series goes.
