Hannah Griffin was a girl when tragedy struck on her family's farm. She still remembers the flames reflected against the newly fallen snow and the bodies the police dug up-one of them her mother's. It was the nation's worst murder scene in decades, and the killer was never found.

Two decades later, Hannah is a CSI investigating a case of child abuse when the past comes hurtling back. Years of buried questions are brought to life. A killer with unfinished business is on the hunt. And an anonymous message turns Hannah's blood cold "Your Mom called...."

A Wicked Snow (Audible Audio Edition) Gregg Olsen Kevin Foley Books In Motion Books

I wanted to like this book. After reading "the Last thing she ever did" which I found interesting and believable I looked for another book by the same author. I guess it was unfortunate that it was this book that I chose for my second try--because after FINALLY getting through this book--I doubt I will ever buy another book by this same author.
It's a bit hard for me to pinpoint what it was exactly that I did not like about the book. I did not like the main character she made me feel tired, I did not like her husband (not given much credit or personality), I did not like the inept FBI agent (Who goes up to a serial killer that has been in hiding for 20 years and tell them you think they are the person you've been looking for, someone who has been on the most wanted list for years, and then just leave) If this is how the FBI operates no wonder they don't have the greatest track record.
And lastly as mentioned by another reviewer why describe the main character as a young girl with budding breasts when describing her when she was young (It just felt creepy) and seemed completely irrelevant, yet he uses this description more than once in the book.

A Wicked Snow (Audible Audio Edition) Gregg Olsen Kevin Foley Books In Motion Books Reviews

Great book. Not a mystery in the ordinary sense. Young girl thought to be the only survivor of a house fire that killed her mom and two brothers is constantly searching for the answer. Why did she survive? If her mother is alive did she set the fire and why? As a young women she struggles to come to terms with the questions as well as the possible answer she finds deep in Alaska. One of the best of Glen Olson.
I like Gregg Olsen, have read possibly all his true crime books and I think he is a dedicated researcher and detailed writer but, this book wasn't near as good as his non fiction. I listened to this book by adding Whispersync. The narrator was pretty good but I do not think people have the accents he gave them, too southern for where they were supposedly from. The accents detracted from the story. I didn't think Hannah, the main character, was disagreeable and unlikable, as some reviewers have said. I think she was fighting demons from the past and was preoccupied, trying to mesh the present with the past. The book help my attention but I did have to take a break from it now and then to refocus. I would probably have liked it better with a different ending but I hadn't figured it out until close to the end, a plus for any mystery. Three stars for the book, two for the narration.
It could have been so good! Well written with a good story, but the end was so bad that I was sorry I'd wasted my time. It's all tied up in the last page or two and the conclusion could have been reached at the beginning without all those words in between. Even worse, loose ends were not tied up, leaving the reader wondering what happened to some of the minor characters. I really wanted to like this book because he's a prolific author and I had hoped to have more to read. Unfortunately, I do not recommend this book.
I enjoyed this book and got through it quickly. So, it was well written and enjoyable and the plot built nicely to the end. While "A Wicked Snow" is most easily identifiable as a detective, thriller, mystery book, it didn't completely conform to the genre. So, therefore the ending surprised me. Clearly the book was close to being done, it just didn't feel finished. The author purposely didn't resolve every tiny, little detail in the murder, escape, cover up, etc.. The main heroine, however, does resolve in her life. And that was the ending the author was building for. I was left flat for a few minutes, however, after reading that, before I worked to that conclusion. I enjoyed the book enough, however, that before I had even finished this one, I bought another book written by the author. Other than that, the story details of the crime are fascinating and gripping, and not completely predictable (which is the bane, I think, of crime thrillers).
Though this is Gregg's first fiction book, you'd never realize it if you were to pick it up and read it without knowing so.

Without giving away the entire plot, Hannah, devoted wife, mother & "county" (as she likes to say) investigator has been living her own personal hell since her traumatic childhood experience. Though she never has been able to live a 'normal' life, she's perhaps accomplished much more than she thought possible. Those who were there in her time of need as a child are there for her NOW, when her past comes back to reclaim her life. Also there at this time are those who are intent on making sure her nightmare never ends.

I rarely read fiction now, since discovering the true crime genre, but hope that Gregg continues with a novel every so often. It's a nice break, especially when written by someone who has the knowledge and experience to make it read like a true crime book. High 5 Gregg!
I was disappointed at the hiccuping narrative Olsen employs, and the characters are so poorly drawn that I found myself not even caring what happened. The so-called Crime of the Century that he describes never seems sinister, much less a reason for the decades of fascination the story insists that people are still feeling. Finally, virtually every character, particularly the women, is described with such hostility that it's hard to tell f the author is simply immature or misogynistic. I have no need to read another of his books.
I gave up. After seeing all the glowing reviews and reading the hype and what this book was supposed to be about...not to mention reading the sample, I eagerly bought the book and dove in, only to be soon confused and bored to tears.
Greg Olsen writes about true crime....but you won't find one real moment in A Wicked Snow. Characters as flat as the Nebraska Plains, forced similes, and a story that ends before it begins.
I never give up on books....but I couldn't...I simply could not force myself to continue. Life is too short and there are too many other books.
