Former prosecutor Timothy Burke recounts the separate tragedies that entwine three very different women in his true-crime drama The Bird’s Song. Taking place amid the racially tense backdrop of 1980s Boston, these tragic cases weave together to form a tale of lost justice, faith, love, and redemption. Three women come together after each experiencing unspeakable horror the rape victim whose rapist has eluded capture, the widow whose husband was brutally murdered by a drug dealer who is later acquitted, and the mother whose young son dies inexplicably at a Boston hospital. All three are forced to adjust to a radically new life, each one relying on Burke as their lawyer and case advocate in order to bring them some measure of justice. As these women’s stories slowly unfold, however, it becomes clear to the reader that it is Burke himself whose life is forever changed. With the author’s assured hand and detailed prose, each woman’s tumultuous journey from unbearable loss to the tentative reemergence of faith in both their lives and in the justice system comes to life. Centered on the story of Ruth, an African American single mother, The Bird’s Song chronicles not only these women’s strength, but also Burke’s own struggle to find humanity within a violent and often inscrutable world. Alternately dark and uplifting, Burke’s latest drama is a carefully crafted tale that unflinchingly reveals the cruel and brutal nature of violent crimes in one of the United States’ most celebrated cities. As the author struggles with his faith in God amid the horrific crimes he handles on a daily basis, Burke learns from those who have been wounded the most that nothing in life is random and that faith, love, and justice can ultimately prevail. As he did in his previous book, The Paradiso Files Boston’s Unknown Serial Killer, Burke masterfully blends high tension courtroom drama with the perseverance of the human spirit. The Bird’s Song is a provocative glimpse into the emotional ravages that violence and loss leave behind. "There was a soft murmur of anticipation within the crowded courtroom as the spectators watched the solitary figure seated at the prosecution table. Surrounded by scores of people, he was never more alone. In many ways his life reflected the loneliness he felt at that very moment. He welcomed the finality of the case that had changed his life. Strangely, in that moment Burke thought of the mother blackbird from the dreams of his past and at the same time, the sheets on the children’s beds. Brightly colored, they were Mickey Mouse prints with the happy Disney character welcoming the sleepy children into his open arms. The happy mouse with the four-fingered, white-gloved hands smiled at him, waving blindly from within the photographs taken of the children’s blood-soaked beds."

This compelling true crime novel opens a larger window on the impact on victims and their families as they pursue long, difficult paths to seek justice in the aftermath of terrible crimes:rape and wrongful death.Three seemingly unrelated sets of stories are actually linked by the faith, courage, persistence, and dignity of a mother, named Ruth, whose son dies in the care of one of the world's most prominent pediatric teaching hospitals: Children's Hospital in Boston.
This book opened my mind and heart to the depth of the emotional work involved in these cases, undertaken by the author, Timothy Burke.
That I have been his friend for almost 40 years is less a matter of disclosure for this review; rather, to demonstrate a newly heightened awareness of just how hard he has worked over the years and a deep sense of pride.
Additionally I am giving readers a hint of what's ahead in The Bird's Song: get ready to have your eyes and heart opened to the grinding emotional work paired with the intellectual fact finding and analysis that is involved in securing justice.
Generous in spirit, Tim shares just how profoundly Ruth showed him the way to the potential of renewed faith and to the realization of justice for her family and for others.

The Bird Song Timothy M Burke 9780615850764 Books Reviews
Well written, interesting to read, couldn't put it down. Comes full circle at
the end .... great story line. Definitely a must read.
Amazing story. Great read, especially if you're from Boston !
I enjoyed this very much. It was an easy read.
A great look into the heart of one of America's great lawyers and storytellers. Burke has the ability to absorb the tragedy of others and fights to ease their pain for justice sake, and his own. This book was a lesson in the importance of life's journey and the human connections we make along they way. It is in those connections that we find out who we are and what we truly believe in.
Great book , I almost thought I was in on the action
I live in the area so I knew where a lot of the places were. I loved this book and the way the author writes. I loved his first book also and hopes he writes more.
After I finished reading The Paradiso Files, I was hoping that Timothy Burke would write another book. The Bird’s Song is so well written. He includes descriptions and history of areas around Boston that make me feel like I was there. He shares his feelings and emotions throughout the book as he writes in the third person. I sat in suspense after each chapter with a trial, as the verdict was not mentioned until the next chapter. When finished, I felt like I knew his clients and I will never forget Ruth; a smart, compassionate woman whom I believe helped Mr. Burke as much as he helped her. I liked this book so much, that I am sharing it with friends and relatives as a “must read”. I hope that Mr. Burke has started his third book. I am waiting.
